WANG TIANDE

Born in Shanghai in 1960, Wang Tiande is one of the most innovative of the modernist calligraphers working in China today.  While many of Wang Tiande’s contemporaries seek to break tradition and make calligraphy relevant to the contemporary world, Wang Tiande does so in a truly unique way. In place of traditional materials and writing implements, Wang Tiande uses such varied media as traditional Chinese clothes to write on and a flame or burning cigarette to write with. His graceful works address transparency, tradition and the irreproducible nature of writing.
