PETER POLLAG solo exhibtion at Art Scene Beijing
5 - 8 November, 2007

In collaboration with the Embassy of Slovakia in China, Art Scene Beijing is proud to host an exhibition of paintings by the renowned international Slovakian artist Peter Pollág. Although he has exhibited extensively all over the world, this will be Peter Pollág’s first exhibition in China.
Educated in Perugia, Paris, Madrid and Prague, Peter Pollág’s work is at once a sensitive reflection of the past and an immediate commentary on the present. A cultural nomad, Peter Pollág’s work exceeds the borders of style, historical periods and territories. Drawing on the mysterious language of parables, symbols and metaphors, not only from Europe, but also from all over the world, Peter Pollág’s world is at once contemporary, distant, real and imaginary.
A masterful colorist, Pollág juxtaposes symbols, lines, curves and planes to accent and create tensions within each of his paintings. Sometimes there are silhouettes of particular figures, people, structures, animals or objects and at others, there are familiar, but not necessarily wholly recognizable fragments. These fragments and objects refer to events, legends, myths and stories that although not entirely real, are not imaginary either. The result is an allegorical world, reminiscent of the work of the Byzantine masters, where events are alluded to through the subconscious. In this world, a new and totally unique understanding is created, one in which Peter Pollág’s apparently incomplete utterances open spaces for the viewer’s imagination to become a part of a story and a history that is at once unfolding and becoming.

In this way Peter Pollág brings apparently diametrically opposed opposites, such as past and present, into the contemporary dialogue, allowing them to exist and interact on the same plane. A refreshing new space is created in which all things are equal, all things are able to interact and all things can interrelate to provide a better understanding of the world, its people and its circumstances. Although his subject matter sometimes refers to events in history that are painful, Peter Pollág’s world is ultimately one that abounds with hope and potential, offering a space to contemplate not only that which is greater than the self, but also the lasting values that exist within each of our own private and interpersonal worlds.
