HUNG LIU solo exhibtion at Art Scene Beijing
1 - 19 April, 2007

Hung Liu, a graduate of the Central Academy of Fine Art, is probably the most famous Chinese woman artist in North America today. Her works have been shown at and collected by many of the top museums and public collections in the United States, including the Smithsonian Museum, the Whitney Museum, the Asian Art Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the San Francisco MoMA, and many more. After exhibiting in so many museums throughout the USA, this exhibition marks Hung Liu’s first exhibition in Beijing since she left China for the USA over 22 years ago.

Hung Liu left China during a less prosperous time, and her memories of living in China are of an austere period. Her works are derived from “many typical figures of the 19th century… [which have been] recorded by…. old photographs; prostitutes, children making a living as performers, refugees during war time, as well as many women workers who were tracking boats, making cloth, grinding wheat as a mule…” Hung Liu breathes new life into the history, and she infuses these images with beautiful traditional Chinese motifs, such as flowers, birds, mountains and rivers as if each canvas had been painstakingly embroidered. Her circles and “drip” technique (which has since been copied by several Chinese artists) balance the images within her works. It is clear from Hung Liu’s paintings that despite the tragedies she faced while living in China, she deeply loves her motherland. Her work celebrates its glorious past and points towards a more positive future.
